
Keyring, Decentralized Identity
What does it take to make decentralized identity feel safe to use? Keyring is my answer: a digital identity system where I led UI, interaction, and content design for a wallet built on cryptography most people will never see.
Overview
Keyring is an open-source wallet that stores verifiable data about a person's identity on their own phone. Using sophisticated cryptography, a person can selectively disclose specific aspects of their identity to different platforms, services, and communities, with strong, clear privacy controls, in a way others can verify. Your biometrics sign a credential with a private key that never leaves your device, and that signature is independently verifiable elsewhere. What the user sees is a clean interface. What gets them there is real cryptographic infrastructure: verifiable credentials, DIDs, DIDComm, pairwise pseudonyms, zero-knowledge proofs. None of that complexity is optional, and none of it can be exposed to the person actually trying to prove who they are.
My Role
I led the UI, human interaction patterns, and content design for the Keyring wallet, working closely alongside Alberto Leon and Brendan Miller, the engineers who brought the cryptographic infrastructure to life. I began with a deliberately critical dive into the system, stress-testing where it could fail in order to surface its real strengths rather than taking the pitch at face value, then got up to speed on the existing standards landscape (the Decentralized Trust Graph working group specs, the Linux kernel's PGP-based maintainer authentication model, the First Person Project white paper) before designing the flows that made the cryptography usable.
What I built

Designed the UI, interaction patterns, and content design for the Keyring wallet, work that's been widely credited as a major driver of the product's success, with ease of use consistently the most-commented-on aspect from users

Designed the confirmation screen that tells a person exactly what they're about to sign, guarantees their biometric data never leaves their device, and gives them a clear choice to confirm or cancel before anything happens

Designed the contact record view, showing the relationship DID, the witness record, and who verified the exchange

Conducted threat modeling across the full identity stack: five assurance tiers and nine credential lifecycle stages, including deep dives on post-quantum credential obsolescence, sybil/duplicate enrollment, and biometric deduplication

Built the "Witness v4.5" Pepper's Ghost holographic installation for the Keyring Digital Identity Symposium, including sourcing physical materials and designing a screen-based fallback plan in case the physical build failed on the day

Helped build the connections mapping so guests could understand the different types of relationships in the identity graph
